“Space Casey” was drawn in 1982, and was my first “serious” attempt at a sophisticated, marketable comic strip for newspaper publication. I used advanced techniques for the day, including ink washes, custom lettering, and zip-a-tone shading. The latter was a diabolical product that came in a large sheet, from which one had to cut little, tiny pieces to fit the spaces where they would be used. It was tedious work, and resulted in a few dozen strips that nobody wanted. Still, it kept me out of trouble for a year!

Crash Gordon (1981) - Early Space Casey
This was one of my earliest attempts at creating a regular comic strip that I could submit to newspaper syndicates. I soon realized that the first mate, Casey, was the more interesting lead character, and I changed the others around, too. I was just getting used to drawing with a combination of pen & ink, marker, and zip-a-tone. I didn’t feel that this one was good enough, but I spent a lot of time learning a lot of skills that would be applied to my later work.
