Sir Francis Drake High School (as it was called at the time) needed an underground newspaper. I had plenty of content published in the “official” school paper, The Jolly Roger, and although my instructor gave me plenty of leash, there were some topics that were just not suitable for the general student population. And so, “The Duck” was born. Production values were very low (ball pen and paper), and ambitions were very “high” (visions of regular subscriptions and a calendar, for example), but at least it provided a venue for documenting the sordid underbelly of student social gatherings known as “partying.”

Alas, although an underground newspaper was a great idea, it proved to be a little too popular. Once the administration got a hold of a copy, pressure was exerted on the brave publisher of the seditious material, and the Thanksgiving issue was the last one.
